The LIFE Program
LIFE is the European Programme for the Environment and Climate Action, which is structured in two sub-programmes: the sub-programme for environment and the sub-programme for climate action. The last one has the following three priority areas: Climate Change Mitigation, Climate Change Adaptation and Climate Governance and Information.
The general objective of LIFE is to contribute to the implementation, updating and development of EU environmental policy and legislation, including the integration of environment into other policies, thereby contributing to the promotion of sustainable development. Through LIFE measures and projects with a European added value for Member States are financed.
The priority area of LIFE Climate Change Adaptation (CCA), under which the present LIFE project is implemented, aiming to:
- contribute to the development and implementation of Union policy on climate change adaptation, including mainstreaming across policy areas, in particular by developing, testing and demonstrating policy or management approaches, best practices and solutions for climate change adaptation, including, where appropriate, ecosystem-based approaches;
- improve the knowledge base for the development, assessment, monitoring, evaluation and implementation of effective climate change adaptation actions and measures, prioritising, where appropriate, those applying an ecosystem-based approach, and to enhance the capacity to apply that knowledge in practice;
- facilitate the development and implementation of integrated approaches, such as for climate change adaptation strategies and action plans, at local, regional or national level, prioritising, where appropriate, ecosystem-based approaches;
- contribute to the development and demonstration of innovative climate change adaptation technologies, systems, methods and instruments that are suitable for being replicated, transferred or mainstreamed.
