The first Greek Land Stewardship Organization has been established on the island of Andros

The first Land Stewardship Organization in Greece is a fact and has been established on Andros Island. The Organization is a collaboration between the Green Fund, the Municipality of Andros and the Social Cooperative Enterprise (SCE) “Aegean Farmers”, aiming at promoting sustainable development on the Aegean islands, using the island of Andros as a stepping stone.

In the framework of LIFE TERRACESCAPE project, the Organization is the connecting link between actors, setting the organizational framework for launching land stewardship on Andros, as well as the rest of the Aegean islands. Actions will be implemented for the protection and restoration of the natural environment and biodiversity, producing climate-smart agricultural products through the re-cultivation of abandoned terraces in Aegean, towards sustainable development. The achievement of this objective will contribute to the creation of green infrastructure that will provide climate resilience and local primary sector sustainability.

Land Stewardship constitutes a practical tool for nature and biodiversity conservation that involves landowners and users (farmers, shepherds, etc.) through voluntary agreements with land stewardship organizations. Nowadays, land stewardship is deployed in most continents around the world as a tool for management and conservation of nature and biodiversity. Through LIFE TERRACESCAPE project, land stewardship will be utilized as a strategic method that encourages active participation of local bodies and land users, in order to enable them to get involved with the conservation of nature and landscape of Andros. This innovative approach for our country involves voluntary cooperation of small landowners, farmers, local management bodies, research institutions, and local businesses to implement environmental-friendly cultivation practices and protect the agricultural landscape with contemporary, socially and economically sustainable practices.

In case you are interested in participating in this ambitious initiative that is launched on Andros and aspires to spread throughout the Aegean, we invite you to become a “Friend” of the Aegean Farmers.
