The cultivation of terraces continues for a second year within LIFE TERRACESCAPE project
22 Apr 2020
In the framework of the LIFE TERRACESCAPE project and in continuation of the last year’s corresponding effort, a total of 43ha of selected terraced fields was cultivated by the Municipality of Andros this year. The aim is the re-cultivation of terraces for the production of high-quality local products.
The fields selected are located at the areas of Rachi, Ormos Korthiou, Vouni, Kochylou, Kapparia, Giannisaio and Tromarchia. As the fields were abandoned for a long time, thus dominated by phryganic vegetation, they required intensive initial clearing using mechanical means. After they have been cleared, the fields were ploughed and sown main with barley (Hordeum vulgare). Smaller areas were sown with vetch (Vicia sativa) and lupin (Lupinus sp.) for fodder production. A total of 4.5 km of new fences was placed, in order to protect the crops from grazing animals.
The produced local agricultural products are planned to be provided to local businesses and processing infrastructures, by the Land Stewardship Organization “Aegean Farmers”, established in the framework of the project.
