Biodiversity on terraces

All local crop varieties have been adapted for centuries to the island soil and climate conditions, especially to the limited water availability. Therefore, it is estimated that they are capable of performing more efficiently under climate change.

Erhard's wall lizard

This diurnal animal is the most common lizard species in the Cyclades. It sits on stones in the morning to thermoregulate, to search for prey later on (insects, arachnids, small snails). Because of its preference to terraces and drystone walls, this animal is widespread on Andros Island.

Kotschy's Gecko

It is rather active in the dusk. When it feels threatened, it may produce distinctive sounds of high frequency.

It prefers terraces and drystone walls, thus it is abundant on Andros.
