Action Areas
The project will be implemented in Andros and selected Aegean islands.
The cultivation terraces of Andros, spread through the entire island, are of distinctive craftsmanship and have been constructed almost entirely by stone plates. Traditional farming practices like the cultivation in terraces of local varieties (especially wheats), have experienced significant growth at the island due to the continuous efforts of locals to take advantage of as many fertile areas as possible. The present cultivated areas of the island cover 10% of its area with a high proportion of these being in steep slopes in the form of terraces. The major agricultural areas are found at the valleys of Fellos, Gavrio, Pitrofos and Korthi while cultivated terraces can be found fragmented at most settlements of Andros. The widest cultivation terraces can be found in Korthi and at Messaria valley.
